IMI Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Class 4&7)

Course SummaryFrom September 2016, any individual who wishes to become an MOT Tester must complete a formal qualification through a training provider rather than attending a DVSA three-day course. This intensive course will incorporate 29 guided learning hours, eight of which must be practical.

Prerequisites

To be eligible for the MOT Testing (Class 4 and 7) course, candidates must:

  • Have a current and full UK driving licence for the vehicle class they want to test
  • Be a skilled mechanic with a minimum of four years’ full-time employment in the service and repair of the vehicle types to be tested. Apprentices who have been employed for four years are eligible
  • Hold a Level 3 qualification recognised by DVSA
  • Have no unspent convictions for criminal offences connected with the MOT testing scheme or the motor trade or involving acts of violence or intimidation
  • Be of ‘good repute’

    Who should Attend?

    Skilled mechanics with a minimum of 4 years full time employment in the service and repair of the types of vehicle being tested.

    Key Benefits

    On completion of this course, candidates will be able to safely work in a vehicle test centre, manage relationships, understand professional development and gain knowledge on how to carry out pre-test checks and MOT tests.

    Once achieved, this qualification enables MOT testers to apply to undertake the DVSA final observed assessment in order to attain their Certificate of Competence (CoC) enabling them to become a nominated tester.

    Certification

    The online testing consists of 40 questions to be answered in 75 minutes and will span the breadth of the content of each of the units. In addition to the externally set and marked online tests.

    Candidates must also successfully undertake practical assessments provided by DVSA. These assessments are carried out on a Thursday and Friday the same as the week MOT Tester course.

    The assessment is undertaken in a workshop environment in the form of an MOT routine and is the practical part of this training.

    Please note that a copy of delegate’s Level 3 qualification (alternatively ATA Light Vehicle Inspection or Diagnostic Technician) certificate should be submitted, along with the completed application form and driving licence check (www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence).

    If in the event the delegate refers, an online resit charge is £55 and thereafter any resit will also incur a cost of £55. Practical resits are also charged at £55.

    The Assessment part of the training will be carried out in a workshop environment and safety shoes and overalls must be worn.

    A minimum 4 years’ experience is required.

    Photographic ID should be provided on the first day of the training.
