Eligibility Requirements
This accreditation is ideal for technicians who want to demonstrate their competence in inspecting vehicles to a high standard and for those seeking a recognised route into MOT Tester training without a formal Level 3 qualification.
To take the IMI Light Vehicle Inspection Technician Accreditation, you must meet the following criteria:
• Industry Experience
You must have at least 3 years’ full-time experience in the servicing, maintenance, and repair of light vehicles This experience must be hands-on and mechanical, not administrative or supervisor
• Technical Competence
You must be confident working independently and able to diagnose and inspect vehicles without supervision
A solid understanding of core vehicle systems (brakes, suspension, emissions, electrical systems, etc.) is essential
• Career Pathway
This accreditation is accepted by DVSA as an alternative to a Level 3 qualification for entry into MOT Tester training
This is a practical, hands-on assessment, designed to validate real-world skills—not classroom knowledge. It’s ideal for experienced technicians looking to formalise their capabilities and take the next step in their career
Please note: MOT Tester Pathway – For candidates aiming to become MOT Testers, the DVSA requires a minimum of 4 years full-time employment in servicing and repairing the types of vehicles to be tested.
Accreditation Content Overview
The Light Vehicle Inspection Technician Accreditation is a practical, experience-based route for skilled technicians to demonstrate their ability to inspect vehicles to a professional standard. It is also recognised by DVSA as a qualifying route into MOT Tester training (Classes 4&7).
